VANCOUVER ISLAND BICYCLE RIDE
Nanaimo to Nanaimo

5 days total / 5 riding days

Our beautiful province of British Columbia has much to offer in terms of cycling. Come and experience scenic south Vancouver Island – a unique corner of the world. We will start exploring it with an affordable and fun formula and, in order to keep costs down, we will provide the basics and let you adjust the level of comfort to your own budget. So on this trip, accommodations and meals will be at your expense, except for one picnic lunch that we will provide. Hope you can find the time to come and ride with us this summer!

GETTING THERE & BACK:
Cyclists will rendezvous on Friday, July 8, at 10:15 am at the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal in Nanaimo; if you plan to fly into Nanaimo Airport or come via Tsawwassen-Duke Point ferry, please let us know in advance to arrange pick up & drop off times. On Tuesday July 12 our van will deliver your gear to the Departure Bay / Duke Point ferry terminals or Nanaimo airport.

THE RIDING:

The ride will be a total of 360 km. The terrain is a mixture of flat and rolling hills with the occasional long climb; see itinerary, below, for approximate elevation gains. A road bike would be preferable for these roads, although there will be sections of hard packed gravel (i.e.: Galloping Goose & Lochside trails) but a hybrid bike or even a mountain bike with slick tires will work wonders, too. Bike at whatever speed you like; odds are there will be someone who rides at your speed. All participants are expected to ride the full distance, though if your knees are sore or if your legs need a day of rest, arrangements can be made for a shuttle. A support vehicle will carry gear (and a cooler), but will not trail behind the group (though we will retrieve cyclists, if necessary). You are given a map and a road log each day, and we will see how you are doing as the van passes you and will assist if help is needed. We will also carry cell phones for any eventuality. Our van will carry a comprehensive set of tools and a floor pump. Helmets are mandatory and riding wearing a safety vest is a good idea.
